Muscle is important because it requires more calories to fuel muscle, which will help you burn more calories during every single minute of the day. They pump up your metabolism: in studies done on steady state aerobic exercise (like running, biking, etc.), it's been shown that your metabolism is boosted while performing the exercise and for a short time afterwards. With interval training, however, your body's metabolism might be raised for a full 24 hours. They burn calories: your body requires a lot of fuel during your interval workouts. If you don't have a ready store of carbohydrates available, your body is forced to burn the next available sources, including fat stores. Tabata intervals are performed by focusing on one exercise at a time for a total of eight sets. A set consists of 20 seconds of maximum intensity effort, followed by 10 second of rest. This set is then repeated for a total of eight sets for a total time of exactly four minutes. You then rest one minute, and move on to another exercise. A sample fat burning workout might include a four-minute interval of squat swimmers' presses (squats combined with corkscrew overhead presses), a four minute interval of reverse lunge curls (reverse lunges combined with bicep curls), and a four minute interval of burpees or squat thrusts. If you would rather choose an aerobic activity to convert into intervals, you can easily do so. For example, to turn jogging into an interval session, sprint at maximum intensity for 20 seconds, then walk for 10 seconds to complete one set. Then repeat this for a total of eight sets. On paper, it sounds simple. In reality, you will feel the pain. And that's a good thing, right?
